Factually, Bharatanatyam is a system of dance, described in the Natya Shastra, capable of manifesting various forms. Four related but distinct kinds conforming to the system of Bharatanatyam are:

Sadir Natyam – a solo dance type performed for centuries by devadasis in temples and eventually in the royal courts of South India, especially in Tamil Nadu.

Bhagavata Melam – a group form of dance drama from Tamil Nadu, with all roles performed by men, and themes based on folklore.

Kuravanji – a group dance by women, interpreting poetic compositions typically on the theme of fulfillment of the love of a girl for her beloved.

Kuchipudi – a group form of dance drama from Andhra Pradesh, with all roles performed by men, and themes based on folklore.

While a number of India’s dance types, like Manipuri, Mohini Attam, Yakshagana, and Kathakali, can be considered variations of the system of Bharatanatyam, they are not as firmly rooted in it as the four listed above.

The birth of this art form as well as the donning of these traditional costumes traces its ancestry way back to the 17th century, wherein Devadasis, who were temple dancers, practiced Bharatnatyam (Sadir Natyam) to worship gods and goddesses. In Southern India, a devadasi was a female artist who was dedicated to worship and serve a temple for the rest of her life. The adhesion took place in a Pottukattu ceremony that was somewhat similar to a marriage ceremony. In addition to taking care of the temple and performing rituals. After becoming Devadasis, the women would spend their time learning religious rites, rituals, dances, etc. They were expected to live a life of celibacy, however, there have been instances of exceptions. The absolute origin of the Devadasi tradition is unknown. The first known mention of a Devadasi is to a girl named Amrapali, who was declared nagarvadhu by the king during the period of the Buddha.

Devadasis wore heavy studded and embroidered saris and were depicted as celestial dancers who performed this classical art dance on earth.

Devadasi would perform the dance daily at the time of worship, and it came to be patronized by the Rajas and the princes. In the course of time, they began performing in the royal courts and thus its religious sanctity was lost.

This unique classical dance tradition deteriorated in the North due to repeated foreign invasions, and mixed dance forms replaced it. Luckily, the dance tradition survived in South India, where it continued to be patronized by kings and maintained by the devadasi system. However, under British rule, propaganda prevailed against Indian art, misrepresenting it as crude, unscrupulous, and inferior to the concepts of Western civilization. This influence was pervasive enough to dissuade the patronage of royal courts for ritual temple dances, and to transfer educated Indians from their traditions. The Madras Presidency under the British colonial government ruled out the custom of dancing in Hindu temples in 1910 and with this, the age-old tradition of this classical dance of South India was almost wiped out, even in Tamil Nadu.

Against all odds, a few families preserved the knowledge of this dance form. Its revival consisted of individuals from disparate backgrounds: Indian freedom fighters, Westerners interested in Indian arts, people outside the devadasi class who learnt Bharatanatyam, and devadasis themselves.

During the early post-colonial years, India was dealing with its aftermath, poverty and strife and with the immediacy of industrial development, perhaps the national agenda didn’t see it significant to address the override of a community of women, allowing the complete dislodging of their identity. This allowed for a new class to emerge as the saviours of traditional art, renaming it, leaving behind the practitioners to fend with social neglect and the perils of improper implementation of a social and economic reform associated with the Prevention of Dedication act, by themselves.

Bharatanatyam now attracted young artists from respectable Brahmin background. Initially met with shock, their participation helped to shift public opinion in favor of reviving the art. Two such ladies were Kalanidhi Narayanan of Mylapore and Rukmini Devi of Adyar. Their works won over much of the orthodox community of Madras. Their reforms of costume, stage setting, musical accompaniment, and thematic content, won against the objections of conservatives that Bharatanatyam was vulgar. Rukmini Devi went on to found the Kalakshetra institute, to which she attracted many great masters and musicians, with whom she trained generations of dancers.

Over the years, this art form has evolved and transformed in its traditional pride, retaining the original essence of the culture.

Bharatnatyam dance has made dancing once again significant, so much so that it is now seen as an essential social accomplishment, and has also achieved international recognition as one of India’s treasures.
templejewelryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17712606983898972077noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-933711381723922473.post-89768643533226527362019-01-15T19:21:00.002-08:002019-01-15T19:22:38.594-08:00Temple Jewelry - How do Artisans make it?
<span style="font-family: "cambria" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Temple
jewelry has been a part of south Indian tradition for centuries now. Ancient
Tamil literature and its historical writings list many types of jewelry worn by
idols, gods and goddesses. The art of jewelry making is known to have
originated somewhere in the reign of Chola dynasty in the 9th
century, and it was a celebrated form of art all the way through Pandya Dynasty and the Krishnadevaraya
rule from the 9th century till the 16th century.
This traditional jewelry or temple jewelry is made by using silver or gold as a
base engraved and crafted to intricate designs with some precious stones
embedded on them. The embedded stones may be dark green or dark reddish maroon
in color.

<span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "cambria" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Temple jewellery, an essential part of the
adornment of the Tamil bride, is also an integral part of the <span style="font-family: "cambria" , serif; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Mangal; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">aharya or
costume of a Bharatanatyam or Kuchipudi dancer. Bharatanatyam is one of the
classical dances in India which has its origin from religious rituals. Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest and most
popular forms of classical in South India. Temple jewelry is important in the
form of accessories to the costumes used in Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi.
The bharatnatyam dance jewelry sets are made with dark green & dark maroon
–red, quality called kempu stones, also known as temple jewelry. The
traditional temple kempu jewelry are the designs worn by Maharanis or Devadasis
in the ancient times. Now days they have become fashionable to be worn for
wedding, occasions and Indian dance forms like Bharatanatyam , and Kuchupudi.
The stones are un-cut polished stones in red & green. Besides being a part
of dance costumes and bridal adornment, the deities and idols are also heavily
decorated with jewelry.

<span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "cambria" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">The temple jewelry is made precisely by hands of
traditionally trained artisans. Vadaserry, a tiny village on the outskirts of
Nagarcoil is famous of the crafting of traditional temple jewelry. About 60
jewelry making units are working with each of them having about 350 artisans,
trained in a traditional way.

ALTA, THE RED COLOR DYE FOR INDIAN CLASSICAL DANCER

Alta is the bright red color liquid ink applied on the fingers and feet of an Indian Classical dancer.

Most of the Indian classical dance forms have many meaningful mudras which are symbolic hand gestures used by the dancer to explain and express.

Please see below some pictures where Altha is used in hand and feet of an Indian dancer.

Painting the hands and feet with Alta brings out the beauty of and expressiveness. It is a common practice to paint traditional designs on to hand and feet during festivals, Indian weddings and Hindu poojas.

Alta in olden days was made from betel leaves. It was replaced with artificial products like Sindoor and Kumkum to create similar liquid.

Arangetram Planning

I am writing this exactly after a month of my daughter's arangetram. Arangetram is a milestone in the dancer’s and parent’s life which requires a lot of planning. In our case the community and friends were extremely helpfull and all I had to do was to assign the responsibility to my friends. On the day of the arangetram, the only thing I did was walking around and watching things happen.

Here is the basic planning idea. The timings are approximate and may vary depending upon the teacher, student and the place you live.

About a year before the Arangetram

As a parent, the first thing you want to do is to discuss with the dance guru to know if your child is ready. The readiness for Arangetram depends on the dancer. Some may be ready in 6 years and some may not be ready even after 10 years. A parent may think the child is ready to do it, but you need the teachers view on this definitely.

Have an idea of which month is appropriate to have the Arangetram. Plan to avoid exam time, SAT, ACT or PSAT etc.. vacation time, Major Indian festival times etc…

Think about the music. Discuss with your child and teacher if you need live orchestra or recorded music. If live orchestra is the choice, contact the musicians for a date and shop around. Please visit http://www.dancecostumesandjewelry.com/arangetram/ to get more details about other aspects of live orchestra.

Discuss with teacher about Jewelry and costume types, number of costumes changes etc..Generally two costume changes are fine.

Have a rough estimate on number of guests you are planning to invite.

Based on number of guests, contact local auditoriums and recital halls. Also make sure the orchestra is ok for that time.

Ask around for good photographers and video graphers and shop around. Since you have one year, you can get bargains ! Even though you have one professional video grapher and photographer, please ask couple of your friends to take video and picture. I planned everything, but missed on this part. Please plan on this and I am sure, your friends will be happy to help you.

Think of a time and plan about food depending upon the timings. Ask around friends about food vendors.

If the dancer does not have appropriate dance Jewelry, plan to buy it.

If you are planning to have chief guests and guest of honor for the arangetram, think of some names and even talk to them about their availability.

About six Months before Arangetram

Should have signed the contract with the orchestra and the auditorium.

Should have confirmed the chief guests if you were planning on one.

Plan on costumes. You can buy sarees for the dress. But stitch it only 5 months before the program and get it before the photo shoot. Most young dancers grow and you don’t want to make the arangetram costume a year ago.

Order items for stage and front entrance decoration, if you are planning to do decorations.

If you plan to give gifts, this is a good time to order them

Plan on invitation – Electronic or print. Either case you have to start design it now.

Confirm photographer and videographer

Set a date for photoshoot

Should have photos from photo shoot.

Should have confirmed the tickets and travel plan of chief guests

Should have confirmed the staying arrangements of the arangetram orchestra members.

Talk to close friends and families and assign them decoration and food area volunteering works.

Design of the invitation should be started now with pictures, Orchestra ensemble and chief guests names.

I can't even believe that I am writing a blog now. But then, there is no better time. If I don't write now, I probably won't write it ever because, as soon as we get the invitations printed, we will have to start mailing it, then we will have to start arranging other things for the arangetram and will get busier and busier...

I have designed and printed many brochures, event tickets, program guides and flyers as part of my volunteering work with many associations in and around Indianapolis. Usually, once we decide a program, the committee members will collect some pictures of the artists and I use publisher to put together the text and pictures. One or two committee members proof read it and suggest some design changes and then we will send to OfficeMax or Kinko's and we are done. All will be finished in a day or two.

But the Arangetram invitations is nothing close to it. We were waiting till last week to get the photo shoot done for the picture for invitation. By the way, photo shoot is another hurdle. Please read my blog on photo shoot to see what happened on that day and what you should or shouldn't do during photo shoot.

Back to invitations - first, come up with a budget. Most of us think printing in India is cheaper. Not true. My friend printed 200 cards for about 18000 Rupees and then paid extra to ship it here. About 2 dollars including the shipping for a 2 sided 8x6 inch card with envelope. Well, there is nothing other than name and address on the envelope. This is offset printing job though - the best quality print you can get for these type of jobs. Here in Carmel, we asked quote from two printers for 350 cards. One from PIP and another from my friend who owns a big printing business. PIP quoted about 600 dollars for a folded 4 page design with 10x7 inch card with digital print. The end product will be a folded invitation with 4 pages, each pages being 5X7 inch size. My friend quoted about the same price for offset printing for the same. Probably the best price one can get in USA. Both quotes included about 2 hrs of design time, provided we give all photos and art work etc...Obviously I went with my friend as it was offset printing and the price was cheaper. This worked out to about 1.75 per card for a larger card with offset. Most of the print jobs you get now a days are digital print outputs. Digital means high quality laser printers. These are cheaper and quicker, but the quality and originality of the color is incomparable with offset printing. Also since the paper or/card is being heated during the digital printing, when you fold, the ink will give way and card break at the folding line, resulting in a very bad appearance. Offset print will not do this to the card.

Selecting the background color, text color, border color and matching them with the envelop color is a time consuming process. Thanks to my wife and dance teacher - they have much better sense of color than me. Make sure the content is readable and clear. Main content is the names of dancer, guru and the event date, venue and time. Make sure to add the RSVP email or phone number. We had designed in an RSVP functionality to my daughter's website and so it worked out fine. If you do not like boxed gifts, please say so in the invitation. Also if you are going to donate the proceedings to some charity, tell that also in the card. Also specify the start and end of the program - this will help your friends to plan that day correctly.

If you are planning for any chief guests, please start talking to them at least 6 months before the arangetram. They are busy people and their calendar gets filled very quickly. We are exactly 3 months away from the Arangetram. We started talking to dignitaries about 3 months ago and and just finalized now. This helped us to put their names in the invitation.

Make sure you have the dance costume and dance jewelry for the photo shoot. Another thing learned is about the background of the picture during photo shoot. Mostly black is good for pictures for brochure and invitation. But if you are planning for different backgrounds in your brochure, try to take some of the pictures with white background also.
Which when performed is a hypnotizing dance that resembles a flame, to honor Lord Shiva-supreme lord of dance. Traditional dance jewelry worn during the Bharatanatyam dance is known as temple jewelry, which was originally made from gold with rubies, emeralds and pearls. Used by the Devadasi girls as they danced in the temples to honor Lord Shiva original dance.

Artisans created theses authentic masterpieces for centuries in the southern part of India. Even today people revere and covet temple jewelry for its unique beauty and craftsmanship. Bharatanatyam temple jewelry, combine with the silk multi-functional costume, which becomes enhanced with bells that allow each foot gesture to have a voice. Which seduces and captivates the audience in a mystic trance, As the performer goes through the motions of the dance the costume flows with them. Stimulating the audiences eyes with broad colors, while using body language and hand gestures to portray the ritual dance.

Originally, temple jewelry beautified the gods and goddesses in the temples during the 9th century. Later, women of the South India adopted a liking for the jewelry, which terpsichorean use in their routine to pay respect to their heritage.
Every piece of the Bharatanatyam performer is essential to the routine even the performers hair dressed with a Chandra (moon shaped) and Surya (sun shaped) ornaments.

The Saree skirt style or Pyjama style which have gold Zari embroidery designs on the skirt. Open when the dancer performs a special posture known as a arai mandi (half-sitting) and muzhu mandi (full sitting). Ever aspect of the beautiful performance ties together giving the audience a breathtaking display meant for a king or god.
TRADITIONAL INDIAN DANCE FORM:
Dance is an ancient and revered Indian art form that is traditionally linked to mythology and classical literature. Historically, accomplished artists were a matter of prolific pride among royal houses; the quality of their respective dance troupes was at one stage the cause of intense competition between the maharajas of Mysore and Travancore. Between the 2nd and 8th centuries, trade between South India and Southeast Asia brought a cultural legacy that endures in the dance forms of Bali (Indonesia), Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar (Burma). Today dance-classical, popular and folk-thrives on city stages, on the cinema screen and in towns and villages throughout South India.
India has a very rich tradition of classical dance. Each form has its own specialty & grace, along with a set pattern of costumes & make-up. Today the acknowledged classical styles are:
1.Bharatanatyam, is a classic dance form originating in Tamil Nadu, a state in South India and is the known as the Indian National Dance. This dance form is a 20th century reconstruction of Cathir, the art of temple dancers. Cathir in turn, is derived from ancient dance forms. Bharatanatyam is usually accompanied by the classical Carnatic music. Bharatanatyam is considered to be a fire-dance - the mystic manifestation of the metaphysical element of fire in the human body. The movements of an authentic Bharatanatyam dancer resemble the movements of a dancing flame
2.Kathak, originated from Northern India. This dance form traces its origins to the nomadic bards of ancient northern India, known as Kathaks, or story tellers. These bards, performing in village squares and temple courtyards, mostly specialized in recounting mythological and moral tales from the scriptures, and embellished their recitals with hand gestures and facial expressions. It was quintessential theater, using instrumental and vocal music along with stylized gestures, to enliven the stories.
3.Kathakali, is a highly stylised classical Indian dance-drama noted for its attractive make-up of characters, their elaborate costumes, detailed gestures and well-defined body movements presented in tune with the anchor playback music and complementary percussion. It originated in the country's southern state of Kerala during the 16th century AD, approximately between 1555 and 1605, and has been updated over the years with improved looks, refined gestures and added themes besides more ornate singing and precise drumming.
4.Kuchipudi (pronounced as ‘Koochipoodi'), is a Classical Indian dance form from Andhra Pradesh, a state of South India. The movements in Kuchipudi are quicksilver and scintillating, rounded and fleet-footed .Specifically there is the Tarangam of Kuchipudi which is unique in that the dancer must dance upon a brass plate, placing the feet upon the raised edges. The dancer moves the plate with much balance as the individual is traditionally dancing on the plate with two diyas (small oil-burning candles) in his or her hands while balancing a "kundi" (small vessel) containing water on their head. At the end of the dance, typically, the dancer extinguishes the candles and washes his or her hands with the water from the vessel.
5.Manipuri, dance is one of the major Indian classical dance forms. It originates from Manipur, a state in north-eastern India on the border with Myanmar (also known as Burma). The traditional Manipuri dance style embodies delicate, lyrical and graceful movements. The feet move is viewed as part of a composite movement of the whole body. The dancer's feet are neither put down nor lifted up at the precise rhythmic points of the music but rather slightly earlier or later to express the same rhythmic points most effectively
6.Mohiniyattam, is a traditional South Indian dance form Kerala, India. It is a very graceful dance meant to be performed as a solo recital by women. The term Mohiniyattam comes from the words "Mohini" meaning a woman who enchants onlookers and "aattam" meaning graceful and sensuous body movements. The word "Mohiniyattam" literally means "dance of the enchantress".
7.Odissi, is one of the classical dance forms of Originates from the state of Orissa, in eastern India. The classic treatise of Indian dance, Natya Shastra, refers to it as Odra-Magadhi. It is particularly distinguished from other classical Indian dance forms by the importance it places upon the tribhangi (literally: three parts break), the independent movement of head, chest and pelvis, and upon the basic square stance known as chauka.
8.Sattriya, the core of Sattriya Nritya has usually been mythological stories. This was an artistic way of presenting mythological teachings to the people in an accessible, immediate, and enjoyable manner. Traditionally, Sattriya was performed only by bhokots (male monks) in monasteries as a part of their daily rituals or to mark special festivals. Today, in addition to this practice, Sattriya is also performed on stage by men and women who are not members of the sattras, on themes not merely mythological.
The true traditional Indian dance, it has to be stated clearly, is not a vulgar form of entertainment but a sacred ritual that is supposed to bring the rasanubhava (catharsis, or spiritual upliftment) to the rasika (audience) and the dancer.
Most of the contemporary choreographers and dancers may use some of the formal traditional Indian dance technique or its elements to stage ballets presenting various themes such as nationalism, unity of religions, the sanctity of the environment, the animal rights activism, or a political party for a social cause.
Many of us do not know where the shops are. Even if you know the street where all the dance accessory stores are located, you don't know which one is trust worthy ! Out of a few vacation days, you struggle to get there in time because of the traffic and distance etc...Finally when you get there the stores are crowded and you will not find your personal space to chose what you really need.

Fine, you can look at the dance jewelry carefully, select the model you need and pick and chose the best finished one because you are seeing it. Finally you are forced to take what ever is available. But for most of the stores, once buy and come out, there is no way for you go back and return it if your child or the dancer didn't like it ! You will see a big board in every store saying "All the sales are final. No returns or refund"

There is no customer friendly approach in many shops. That is when most of the customers go look for an online store. We have couple of online stores selling dance jewelry in India and abroad. The web store www.DanceJewelryOnline.com offers all types of Indian Classical dance jewelry and costumes for very reasonable price. The shipping service is fast depending upon the service you pay for. Usually you get the jewelry with 5~6 business days.

This store has readymade classical dance costumes too. Please click here to see the variety of dresses they have. Traditional Kundan Jewelry is one of the oldest form of gemstone jewelry in Indian. This type of jewelry uses a gem set with thin gold foil between the jewelry base mount and the gem stone. Usually the gem stone is placed in the mount and secured with gold foil between the gaps. Originated in Rajastan and Gujarat, Kundan jewelry is the most beautiful and loved jewelry in north India.
Jaipuri Jewelry is another form of Kundan jewelry in which the Kundan gemstone setting is in the front and enamel designs on the back of the jewellery bits. This is also called as Meenakari Kundan jewelry or Bikaneri Jewelry. Jaipur is the main source of Meenakari Kundan jewelry and Bikaneri Kundan Jewelry in India.
These are some of the designs of Kundan jewelry we have in our online store. Please have a look.
Many parents call us and ask this question while buying Bharatanatyam dance Jewelry set from our online store. Probably more than 15% of the questions we get are related to bangle size.

Selecting the correct bangle size is very important. Obviously you don't want the bangles come our of your daughters hands while she is performing a hastha during her Bharatanatyam recital. On the other hand you need to make sure she is comfortable wearing them and not bothered about them being so tight on the hands.

So what is the trick? Well, there are two methods to do this. One is very complicated and involves math and theorems - Uhh !!! Even though most of the stay home Indian Moms have double degrees, I don't want to remind them of their good old math homework days. I will explain the most simplest methd here.

First let me tell you the different bangle sizes available. The most common sizes are 2.2, 2.4, 2.6 and 2.8. If your hands are really big, then you need size 3.0, but we don't sell them. What is 2.2? Is it in inches or centimeters? Well, all the measurements are in inches. Find out if the dancer already has a bangle she is comfortable with. Take it and place it on a white A4 size sheet. Use a pencil to mark the inner circle of the bangle on the paper. Use a ruler to measure the diameter of the circle. That is the size of bangle for your dancer. Usually schildren under 6 will be comfortable with a size 2.2. Six to 10 year old ones can fit 2.4 or 2.6 size. 12 and above will have sizes 2.6 and 2.8

Bangle is the essential part of the dance jewelry set.

Hope this helped !!

Good luck...templejewelryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17712606983898972077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-933711381723922473.post-20297023250785378532012-01-09T20:11:00.000-08:002012-07-06T21:17:59.584-07:00Importance of ankle bells in Indian classical dance

Indian classical dance is a varied form of art and has numerous styles to boast of. The different styles of dancing broadly pertain to the different geographic regions in the country. Each one of them proudly presents its own style, rhythm, grace and costume. Irrespective of these differences, most Indian classical dances have one thing in common – the "Ghungroo" or the ankle bells that are tied around the ankle of the Indian dancers.

The ghungroo is considered very special and are regarded with great respect by the Indian classical dancers. It is regarded as an inseparable part of the Indian classical dancing tradition for many forms of Indian classical dance such as the Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam, etc.

Although, today the custom of wearing ankle bells has become prevalent in many dances such as the belly dance and most Indian classical dances; and is blindly followed as a tradition by many Indian classical dancers; there is a definite reason behind why this practice came into existence.

The ghungroo or ankle bells are nothing but small metallic balls (usually made of brass) with a smaller metallic ball inside each one of them. They are strung together and tied to the ankle of a dancer. In modern days, for ease of use, these metallic balls are fixed on a leather or cloth strap that can be easily worn around the ankle of the dancer. Whenever the dancer moves his/her leg, the metallic balls in the ghungroo originate a sound that is in rhythm with the leg movements.

Swift and graceful movements of different parts of the body such as the eyes, head, hands and feet in tune with the music is what constitutes a dance in most of the Indian classical dance forms. For an observer it is easy to decipher the movement of the eyes, head and hand while it might not be so easy to distinguish and appreciate the leg movements. Most of these dances tend to use complex leg movements that serve to highlight the dancing skills of the individual. However all this will just go unnoticed if there is nothing to accentuate these movements. And that is the exact purpose why the practice of using ankle bells while performing a dance came into being.

Apart from emphasizing the complexity of the leg movements, the sound from the ankle bell also keeps the dancer in tune to the music and stay in rhythm, gives more life to the dancing and simply adds to the grandeur
templejewelryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17712606983898972077noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-933711381723922473.post-12938263933986451662011-09-22T07:13:00.000-07:002012-01-13T22:01:19.582-08:00Who gave you the right to abuse Indian culture in the name of culture?

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "American Typewriter";">I have to share this incident with all people who are true art lovers and understand Indian culture in the real sense. Well, this happened just a couple of days back and I was witness to an unnerving night of celebration. When I came out of the door after the event, just wondered what was celebrated and what was propagated?

<span style="font-family: "American Typewriter";">As children we grew up learning that our rich heritage, our way of life and Art is our culture, today where do we get to see them, it is certainly a rarity. I planned for about a week ahead to make sure that I did not miss this cultural event which celebrates and propagates Indian Art and culture, this is an event organized by a legitimate Organization as part of their cross cultural Initiative, excited all week long looked forward to it and finally the day came, they had a regular meet and greet gala and the program started at 4.30PM, which I am glad started on time. The program started with a welcome speech and the first inaugural program as per the brochure distributed said Indian classical dance form and there comes the compere announcing a brief version of the richness of this classical dance…wow what just happened, classical dance to a Amir khan Bollywood song, this is not culture my dear, this is Bulture straight from Bollywood. I had loads of laughter; I had more adventure coming my way. Next is again a classical dance form from India, what was it this time, not surprised and advertisement commercial straight from the TV promoting Indian tourism of Kerala…hmmm good job all in the name of culture, this is how one can get away doing anything without stuff and the only skill you need is just be “street smart”. Another aspect worth mentioning is about, choreography and clothes, both the C’s were nowhere close to aesthetics, this is a easier strategy to getting famous faster in today’s time, sad that this strategy is gone beyond movies….

<span style="font-family: "American Typewriter";">The next part of the program got more interesting with sheer murder of our folk dance forms, thanks to Bollywood dance and music which is like one size fits all; the next piece was the highlight with the dancer claiming to have a legitimate qualification, but has no teacher name or institute to talk about both in her profile nor in her compere, more like an “Anonymous type”. Well the only thing we could figure out that she was trying to attempt a very famous classical dance form, but to a disgrace it turned to be a sad version of a YouTube video of a very famous dancer from India who is considered as a great artist from India and recognized worldwide. How desperate can one get to be in the face of audience? Copy wow…

<span style="font-family: "American Typewriter";">After all this, I just lived thru and was alive, then came this performance of a good artist, she stole the show, her presence for 10 mins took away all the pain that I went thru for the last 50 mins. She is a true dance lover and we could experience that throughout her performance. Kudos to her but I also feel sad that she had to share stage space with a very substandard lot of performers. Hence she stands to be ‘Best in the Worst’.

<span style="font-family: "American Typewriter";">Coming back to my question, who are we - an individual an institute, who has this right to abuse Indian art and culture in the name of Culture? I strongly believe that there is right and wrong to everything, then stand up and have the guts to say we promote Bollywood why Classical. The word classical is such a divine part of our rich culture so closely woven to our heart through our Dance and Music, why does anybody want to showcase this in a wrong way on any platform?

<span style="font-family: "American Typewriter";">I am so confused that we ourselves are bent upon damaging our identity and portraying this completely different from what it is, to other people leave alone people from other cultures what is happening to people from our culture who are day in and out either approving, acknowledging, witnessing, participating in such gruesome act of tarnishing our Indian Culture…

<span style="font-family: "American Typewriter";">This is what I felt like inking to all of you as an artist, art lover, critic whatever if not anything just an Indian who loves her country and the core values of who we are and what makes us unique from others…

<span style="font-family: "American Typewriter";">At the end I am left with no answer but one question are we so beyond anything that we believe “any crap can sell”? If yes, all those dear legitimate organizations/ committee’s, just sit back once to think what happens to all those people who worked, are contributing unconditionally in passing on this rich art form with at most humbleness to our future generations…do we have any responsibility at all??? Please realize that if you are not directly qualified to contribute to art and culture, we all can still make a small difference in this world in our own capacity, and so NO to anything that may cause a smudge to the glowing culture.

Stitching a Bharatanatyam dance costume or any other classical dance dress for your child has become such a cumbersome process nowadays. Especially if you live outside India, spending time to search for the correct color saree and finding a nice tailor is at least one full day’s work. The cloth shops in India are extremely crowded no matter what the season is and tailors are always busy. Unless you know the tailor personally, getting a dance dress stitched in couple of weeks is a herculean task. Needless to explain the process of taking measurement at the tailors place!

How about doing all this without leaving you house at your convenient time, and get the costume of your choice delivered to you within 5 weeks? This is exactly what you can do from our online store http://www.DanceCostumesAndJewelry.com. We have experienced tailors in Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Cochin and Delhi to make the costume of your choice at its own authenticity. Most of our Bharatanatyam dresses are stitched from Chennai or Coimbatore and the Mohiniyattam dresses are stitched at Cochin. We have tailors in Hyderabad and Delhi for making Kuchipudi, Odissi and Kathak dresses.

How does the process of stitching dance dress online works? Ok, we will explain the process of ordering your own custom stitched dance dress from beginning to end, in the following paragraphs. First you need to create an account in our online store. Creating an account is very important and has many advantages. Once you create an account and enter your shipping address, our store remembers it and you need not enter your address each time. However, for security reasons, we do not store your credit card number. You have to enter it each time you process an order with us. This gives you the flexibility to use any card for your order. We accept all major credit cards – VISA, Discover, MasterCard and American Express.

Before you place an order to stitch your dance costume, please open this page and see all the different types of dance costumes we stitch. Then click on the appropriate costume type. For example, if you want to stitch a Bharatanatyam dress, you would arrive at this webpage. You will see two pictures associated with this product - a line drawing and a photo of the dress. Open the line drawing and go through the measurements and the numbers associated with each measurement – for example the measurement number 8 is the sleeve size of your blouse. If you are the dancer, you need another person’s help to take the measurements. If your child is the dancer, you can take the measurements for her/him. Decide the color you want for the costume. We always ask for two choices because the sarees of a particular color and type may not be available all the time with our saree vendors.

When the dancer is ready, use a flexible tape to take the measurements and start in the order given in the website. Please see our YouTube video before you start. The first measurement you take will be height of the blouse. Please call us anytime if you have a question about how to take a measurement. You need to fill in all the columns before you click on the “add to cart” button. There is an option to mention the style of the dance costume. In this column, enter any comments you have such as – full covering blouse, 2 fans only, three fans etc…Also at the end of the page you will see the material type. The cost of the dress varies according to your selection. If you select the art silk material, the dress is less expensive and the Dharmavaram silk is most expensive. Make sure you selected the correct material and verify the price.

Once you completed all the measurement entries and clicked on “add to cart” the order will be placed on your cart. Nothing will happen until you pay. Since you are logged in, this will stay in your account, even if you log out of the system. You can come back next day and then place the order. When you are ready to place the order and have the credit card ready, go to your cart and “Proceed to check out”. You need to enter the credit card info in the next page. After entering all the necessary information, proceed to complete the order and you are done. Please make sure you have received an email from us confirming the order. If you have not received the email, check your spam folder. Please note the order ID and write down it in a safe place. You need to mention this number if you need to call us to enquire the status of the order.

As soon as we receive your order, our order processing staff in India will start looking for the correct color sarees and materials in our stock. We usually have the stock of most of the fast moving colors in Art Silk and Apoorva Silk. We have almost all the best quality ankle bells available in South India in our website. The Ankle bells are known as “Salangai” in Tamil and “Chilanka” in Malayalam. Basically they are two types – Leather and cloth. There is one more less popular type made of Rexin also. As you know, the quality and confort of these are not well known.
Ankle bells made of genuine leather are very comfortable to wear and knwon to last long – you may get bored with them before they start tear apart. These have cushion pads behind, where it comes into contact with your ankle and so are very comfortabe to wear during hours of long practice or performance. The buckles, once fastened won’t come apart and are worry free. Some dancers prefer cloth type and would like to tie the Ghungroos instead if buckle them up.
The size of the Salangai depends upon the number of bells in each of them. It is appropriate to wear a two line Ankle bell for a seven or eight year old dancer, while adults prefer to have a four or five line Ghungroo. Based on the size, the number of bells in the Ghungroo will change. A good quality Ankle bell will have atleast 10 bells in each line. There fore, a 4 line Ghungroo will have about 40 bells in one pad. The quality of sound depend upon the size of the individual bell. The small size bells make less sound since the ball inside the bell is also small and its movement is lesser than that of a big bell.
Ankle bell coming off from the dancers leg during a performance is considered as a bad sign. Also it is dangerous and may injure the dancer. So it is important to select a good quality Ankle bell and one should make sure it is fastened or tightened properly before the dancer goes to the stage.templejewelryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17712606983898972077noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-933711381723922473.post-10647315610427927822010-02-23T18:18:00.000-08:002012-01-13T22:13:34.446-08:00Indian Classical Dance makeup

This has a pyjama style pant, blouse, two fans, arapatta and dhavani.

The jewelry with red and white stones, imitation temple jewelry, and real temple jewelry. Out of all these, the cheapest is the first catagory. The base metal to make these and imitation temple jewelry are the same. Only the color and type of the stones are different. The real temple jewelry is made of silver and coated with gold. The stones used for this are the kemp stones imported from Srilanka.templejewelryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17712606983898972077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-933711381723922473.post-47467653539594077472009-09-13T17:24:00.000-07:002012-01-13T22:11:47.327-08:00MOHINIYATTAM DANCE COSTUME & JEWELRYThe costume in Mohiniyattam dance comprises of a white ‘kasavu’ saree, a decorated blouse and a waist garment. The edges are embellished with golden fabric know as kasavu kara. The makeup is simple. The face is treated with yellow and pink colored paste. The eyes are given a lining of black color. The lips are reddened. The hair is tied up and adorned with jasmine flowers.Mohiniyattam jewellery is marked by its use of gold or gold plated jewelry. Usually Mohiniyattam jewellery set consists of necklaces, ‘vanki’ (armband), ‘oddiyanam’ (waistband), nose stud (Nath Bullaku) and ‘jimikki’ (swinging ear ornaments). Necklaces are basically of two types: ‘maangamala’ and ‘Kaasumala’. The ‘mangamala’ is made by linking together gem studded mango shaped pieces. The ‘kasumala’ is made by attaching gold coins together. The pendants for the necklaces are shaped like swans, peacocks and parrots. Similar to mangamala or kasumala, the elakkathali is another famous traditional ornament in the Mohiniyattam Jewellery set. The oddiyanam is also gold plated which may sometimes have the picture of Goddess Lakshmi engraved in it. This particular type of oddiyanam is known as Lakshmi Belt. This plain Lakshmi Belt is very popular and often Bharatanatyam dancers use it as part of Bharatanatyam jewellery.templejewelryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17712606983898972077noreply@blogger.com0
